Outrage as Montalcino proposes blended Rosso (Italy)

Proposals to allow Rosso di Montalcino to be blended with other grapes have divided the Italian wine world. On 7 September, Montalcino wine producers will vote on whether to split Rosso di Montalcino – the ‘second’ denomination to Brunello di Montalcino – into three tiers. Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese Superiore, and Rosso di Montalcino Sangiovese would both remain 100% Sangiovese, with differences in yield allowances. A third level, Rosso di Montalcino, would have to contain a minimum of 85% Sangiovese with 15% other ‘authorised red grapes’ in the blend, reports Decanter.

Wine will curb alcoholism, says Russian president (Russia)

Russians should drink more wine to fight widespread alcohol abuse, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has said. ‘Winemaking is one of the sectors that should be developed and contribute to the eradication of alcoholism,’ he said at a meeting with the governor of Russia’s southern Krasnodar Territory - a region with a burgeoning local wine industry, Decanter reports. ‘Countries where this sector is strong have no problems with alcohol abuse: problems with alcohol abuse stem from ‘other drinks,’ Medvedev said.

Fruits of vintage vines wins battle for Torbreck

David Powell, of Torbreck Vintners in the Barossa Valley, is a confident and larger than life figure. His distinctive wines have a cult following in Australia and overseas. Starting in the mid-1980s when the SA government was paying people to rip out unwanted Shiraz vineyards, the then unpopular Barossa Shiraz-style was reinvented as a big mouthful of soft, ripe, plump, dense, long and delicious Shiraz flavours. David’s wines are packed with dense old vine (60-100 plus years of age) flavours, reports In My Community.

Scientists discover sulphur can be good for grapes

West Australian scientists are excited about results from their latest ground breaking research on the effect sulphur has on table grapes. For hundreds of years sulphur has been used as a preservative to control pathogens such as fungi and bacteria. But the latest research shows sulphur also activates or primes the defence system in grape berries. This world first research could change the way table grapes, wine and dried fruits are preserved, reports ABC Rural.

The wine is one of seven judged and will be tasted as part of the 2011 Five Nations Challenge, reports Peninsula Weekly.

Millionaire makeover

In 2009, Mitchelton Wines turned 40. It’s not a well-celebrated fact because the grand, central-Victorian winery was in a holding pattern, waiting for a buyer. The winery had reportedly been up for sale by its owner, Lion Nathan, for four, maybe five years. Today, Mitchelton has new owners. Gerry Ryan and his son Andrew officially took ownership on August 17 and are set to re-energise Mitchelton Wines, writes Jeni Port in The Age.
