Asians out in force at Vinexpo (Asia)

The growing influence of Asia on the global wine trade was once again in evidence at Vinexpo last week, with organisers reporting that no less than one foreign visitor in three came from the region. China showed its strength and growing interest in wine by doubling the number of participants. The major purchasers from Japan were well represented at the Bordeaux exhibition, while larger numbers of visitors were noted from Taiwan, Singapore, Vietnam, Malaysia and India, reports The Drinks Business.

New Zealand’s Marisco Vineyards has signed a distribution deal with a major Chinese company. Marisco is a Marlborough winery which makes The Ned and The King’s Series. It has now signed a distribution deal with Dynasty Fine Wines Group. The winery won nine Decanter World Wine Awards this year, A Sticky End Noble Sauvignon Blanc 2009 winning Gold and The Ned Sauvignon Blanc 2010 taking Silver, reports Decanter.

France dominates the trophies honours list in this year’s International Wine Challenge, coming first for the third consecutive year with 34 wines being awarded a trophy - a 62% increase on last year. Spain followed with 13 trophies - almost double compared to 2010, with Italy (11) third, closely followed by Australia (10), reports Harpers Wine & Spirits.

Bureau faces reduced funding, increased demand for services (US)

In the current federal fiscal year, which ends October 1, the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau was funded at roughly $100 million; this coming year, the TTB’s funding may be reduced to the $96.8 million approved last week by the House of Representatives’ appropriation committee. This is $1 million less than President Barack Obama had requested for the bureau, and the amount potentially could be further reduced by the U.S. Senate, reports Wines & Vines.

A mystery reddening of vines in South Australia has researchers at the University of Adelaide searching for answers. The virus-like symptoms have been found on vines in regions to the north and south of Adelaide, with growers asked to join the hunt for clues to the cause.

Alice Springs council protests against cheap alcohol ban

Coles and Woolworths are under attack in Alice Springs for banning cheap wine in an attempt to force up the alcohol floor price. The Alice Springs town council has decided five votes to three to ask the supermarket chains to abandon the new rules, due to come into effect Friday, reports The Sydney Morning Herald.
