Rosemount Winery sale expected to settle in New Year

The sale of the iconic Rosemount Estate winery, in the Lower Hunter, is on track to be settled by the end of January. An Expression of Interest (EOI) posted on the Muswellbrook Shire Council website lists UHI Pty Ltd as contracted to purchase the winery, and seeks expressions for leasing the individual sheds or the whole site for use from February 2011.

Four handsome mutts rescued and rehabilitated by the Nelson Ark now have their cute faces plastered on 2500 bottles of wine. Labels featuring Skipper, Beau, Kauri and Mack have been stuck on bottles of Richmond Plains organic Sauvignon Blanc, which are being sold to fundraise for the charitable trust.

A new online information service will help visitors to the region, as well as locals, to find out fast what is open and when over the holiday season and throughout the year. Hawke’s Bay Wine Country Tourism Association has launched the service, which details opening days of cafes, restaurants, cellar doors and a wide range of holiday activities and services.

Brand Phoenix has been appointed distributor for the Angove Family Winemakers in the UK off-trade. It will distribute the Angove Family Collection, Angove Organic and also Bear Crossing which has been developed to put back some excitement into the Australian wine scene in the UK and reunite UK wine customers with Australia.

In Thursday’s Daily Wine News a link was posted pointing to a Business Day (South Africa) report, that argued exports of South African wine to the United Kingdom had dropped by a certain percentage. A spokesperson from Wines of South Africa (WoSA) later contacted Daily Wine News with the following statement (posted below in full and without editing) disputing the article’s findings and referring to its reporting as “inaccurate”:
Constellation Brands to sell Australia, UK wine units for $290.8 million

Constellation Brands Incorporated, the world’s largest wine business, has agreed to sell its Australian and UK operations to Champ Private Equity of Sydney, in a transaction valued at about A$290 million. The deal is expected to close by the end of January, New York-based Constellation said in a statement today. It will include almost all of Constellation’s Australian, UK, and South African brands. Constellation will retain a stake of about 20% interest in the business.

Sales of lower percentage alcohol wines are booming with one supermarket revealing a growth in sales of 80%. Young people are thought to be behind the huge increase in sales of weak booze — as they try and get through the Christmas period in one piece. A survey by Sainsbury’s saw that 18-25 year olds are concerned about health and appearance — and one in three are concerned that excessive drinking will affect their health and work.

‘Rube Goldberg’ PLCB wine vending machine boondoggle (US)

From the outset, the Independent State Store Union (the state-wide union representing 730 state store managers) has been a demonstrative critic of the ‘Rube Goldberg’ wine vending machine initiative by the Pennsylvania Liquor Control Board. The announcement that these machines are being shut down indefinitely is further proof of the intentional, internal sabotage of the State store system.
