Flavours from Down Under highlight wine dinner (US)

Recently, I had the pleasure of attending a wine dinner at the Beehive Restaurant that highlighted Robert Oatley’s Australian wines, writes Mark Maberry for Reporter News. The wines from Australia have become popular in the United States partly because of their affordable price but also because of the good quality.

Portugal catch-up (Hong Kong)

The Portuguese wine industry has a long and venerable history but its impact in Hong Kong is mostly limited to inexpensive branded wines sold through supermarkets. Sales of Portuguese light still wines in Hong Kong are forecast to be 20,000 cases (nine litres per case) this year, as against the projected sales of 840,000 cases for France and 740,000 for Australia.

Island flavour in Melbourne

Kangaroo Island proved to be a big hit at the Royal Melbourne Show when Bay of Shoals Wines, Tourism Kangaroo Island and the SeaLink Travel Group worked together at the 11-day event. Bay of Shoals’ Greg Miller Wines said interest in Australia’s fourth national icon, Kangaroo Island was high, with many of the 600,000 visitors to the show saying they had seen the island on TV or heard about it from friends and family.

Arsenic-treated posts being removed from vineyards

A growing number of vineyard managers are pulling out timber posts and replacing them with steel or recycled plastic. Benjamin Chau Kai-leung, deputy executive director of the Trade Development Council, said the fair has made the SAR a force on the international wine scene. Wine imports increased by 72% in the first nine months of the year to HK$4.67 billion.

Worst-ever harvest almost over (US)

The fiery red leaves dotting Sonoma County vineyards on Wednesday provided vibrant proof that the grape harvest is nearly over. But hanging underneath the colorful foliage were dismal reminders that 2010 was the worst grape harvest in recent memory, with financial losses possibly setting new records in the county. Elias Torres, a longtime grapegrower, bent underneath the canopy and cut loose a cluster of rotting grapes from the Halling Vineyard in Dry Creek Valley.
